SKYPE–is everyone’s identity available to others? Last year my husband put SKYPE on our computer so that we could communicate easily while he was overseas. We only used it a few times to i.m. each other. So, tonight I was online, and all of a sudden SKYPE popped up with a man who claimed he was from Egypt, and he seemed to be under the impression that I was a single girl that he was trying to "make friends with." What on earth??!! Is SKYPE some kind of open online dating service? How would a guy in Egypt get connected to MY old SKYPE account???
There is NO WAY I revealed my SKYPE i.d. on the internet. Like I said, my husband just put SKYPE on the internet for the two of us to communicate while he was overseas. This was last year, and we haven’t used SKYPE since. I’m a little bit creeped out!
Skype is not an online dating service. Sometimes people will just do a search on a name they pick and will look at the profiles of that person. The best thing is to not put much information about yourself in the profile and decline invitations from people you dont know. References :
Hi there;
Skype is great but can be difficult to understand. First of all, no you are not avalible to everyone. You can select weather you wish to be or not in options. This just means that if someone does a search that matches your criteria, reguardless of how long it has been sice you were online or not, weather you are shown in the results or not.
Secondly if you have your status set to "Skype Me" you are visible in search results that anyone on the planet can perform. Online is when you are simply online, but "Skype Me" is a feature which allows your ID to be seen when a "Skye Me Search" is done by someone else using Skype.
The guy from Egypt was probably just looking for a online GF and stumbled across you in the search.
Hope this clears things up for you, see you around on Yahoo7 Answers. References :
